The Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association (SSJCA) runs junior cricket in the Sutherland Shire.
Competitions are organised in separate age groups for under 8s, under 10s, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s. A player's age is determined as at the 1st of September. Within each age group, there are different grades (A, B, C etc) to cater for the different levels of skills and experience.
The rules of cricket are modified in the younger age groups and lower grades to focus on skill development, player participation, prevention of injury and most of all, having fun.
A match is played over 2 consecutive Saturday mornings. Typically 1 team will bat on the first weekend and then swap for the following weekend (except under 8s where both teams get to bat and bowl each week). The time involved varies from 1.5 hours per weekend for the under 8s to 3 hours per weekend for those teams playing traditional cricket.
There are many clubs that participate in the SSJCA competition and grounds are located through out the Shire.
This year, the cricket season commences on September 15 and goes through to March. There are normally 10 rounds played in the season plus a final round for the two highest placed teams. There is a break during the school holidays, when no cricket is played.
More information about the SSJCA, clubs and rules can be found on the SSJCA website.
