St Patricks 10B’s Minor Premiers and Premiers

St Pat’s 5/75 beat Caringbah Sports 8/70
What a game, despite winning the Minor Premiership we were going into the final as 2/1 outsiders against a team that had a couple of players from Sutherlands U10 development squad and an endless supply of fast bowlers.
We had a game plan which we knew we had to stick to no matter what happened. Every player knew their job and was prepared to sacrifice their own goals for the benefit of the team.
Despite all the rain received on Thursday we were still able to get play under way on time, a big thanks to the President (Chris Hewitt) his father in-law Ian and Darren Smith who provided buckets, labour and a blower.
We won the toss and despite our preference to chase we decided to have a bat under sunny skies. The first over was a disaster our brave opener Angus got a quick ball on leg stump, which was whipped to square leg only to see the Caringbah fieldsman take a screamer (1/0). Will and Mason saw off both opening bowlers and seemed to be progressing well in slow conditions, trying to push the run rate they took off for a quick single only to see the stumps thrown down with a direct hit (Mason out for 3). Harry Marr was next in and in identical circumstances to Angus was caught at square leg without troubling the scorer (3-6) the coach took a peek to the heaven’s (possibly calling on the patron saint to provide the team with strength) as the Skipper Harry Hewitt strode to the wicket cool as a cucumber. Harry and Will went about their business and despite one close call they played very well putting the team in a good position at the break 3/30 from 18 overs.
It was now our turn to bowl, we all knew our fielding positions and discussed amongst ourselves that we had to really take the half chances to get on top of Caringbah. Sam and Harry opened the bowling both starting with maidens. Sam was getting the better of one of the openers who tried to pull a quicker ball; Josh McGrath took a screamer at short mid-on (1/1). Harry then set up their best player with great ball that left him on a length hitting the gloves heading to first slip where Will Duff took a great catch (2/4). James and Angus bowled well with Angus getting a ball to rise sharply giving our very reliable keeper Harry Cook an easy chance. Mason bowled very well and was rewarded when Will took another sharp catch this time at silly mid-off; Harry Marr took the fielders out of play by clean bowling another Caringbah batsman just before the break. We headed to the break evenly poised Caringbah where 5/38 off 20 overs.
After the break Caringbah knew they needed quick wickets and they picked up Will within a couple of overs for 7, Harry Cook strode to the wicket under strict instructions from Coach Mood (who’s resting heart rate was around 85bpm) to pick up the run rate. The Harrys started too hit out and took risky singles; it was at that time that Coach Mood realised that Cookie wasn’t that fast after all. They both moved the score along to 55 before a good catch removed Harry Hewitt for a well-played captain’s knock of 20. Sam was next in with 5 overs to go, what was a fair total? Harry and Sam played smart, used the pace of the ball, took quick singles and added 20 runs for the last couple of over’s. At the close of the innings St Pats were 5/75 (35 overs) Harry Cook 24 Not Out and Sam Mood 7 Not Out.
Caringbah needed 38 runs from 15 overs we needed 5 wickets and tight bowling, you couldn’t have asked for a closer match. Our bowlers didn’t take a wicket in the last 15 overs however they all bowled very tight. Sam, Harry Hewitt, Angus, James, Josh, Zac and Mason held their nerve keeping sundries to minimum. Robbie, Callum and Zac excelled in the field all three providing game breaking saves and run outs to enable the dramatic finish.
It came down to the last over Will Duff to bowl, they need 7 runs; first ball dot, second ball they hit the ball to mid-off they run, Robbie whips off the bails out!, third ball they run 1, fourth ball they hit the ball over keeper run one and Zac Long throws down stumps going for a second run, fifth ball dot, sixth ball 5 runs to win ….dot ball.
Match over St Pats are victorious, well done to all the boys.
Team members: Callum Fisher, Robbie Duggan, Harry Cook, Harry Marr, James Gair, Will Duff, Zac Long, Sam Mood, Mason McNamara, Harry Hewitt, Josh McGrath and Angus Morrison.
A big thank you to all the people and parents that have helped out during the past two years, the boys have been a pleasure to coach and teach; the progress they have displayed has been second to none. I look forward to watching their development over the next couple of years.
Coach Mood.

Congratulations to the two St Patrick’s Girls teams for making it back to back grand finals. Both our Division 1 and Division 2 teams will contest the Sydney Rivers Girls Cricket Association Grand Finals this weekend.
It has been a mighty improvement for both teams over the 11/12 season, even though they made the Grand Finals last season, this time the Div 1 team are favourites as they finished as minor premiers and the Div 2 team were only just off the pace with a few wash-outs stopping the charge.
On Saturday, Div 1 will play St George, as Div 1 finished on top of the ladder; we are entitled to a home game at Kirrawee and plan to use the home ground to our advantage. Div 2 will play University, who finished higher so we will play at their home ground, Scarborough.
Games start at 2 pm and are played as a 20/20 format with everyone welcome to come down and give the girls the support they deserve.

Sutherland wins Final of Poidevin Gray Shield
U/21 competition February 5.
Sutherland defeated North Sydney in the Final of the Poidevin Gray Shield (U/21)
competition on Sunday (February 5).
North Sydney won the toss and were all out for 184 runs. In reply Sutherland cruised to
victory with 3/185. It was only the fourth time Sutherland has taken out the prestigious
title (previous Shield wins occurred in 1988, 1989 & 1999).
Joel Brockley scored 109 of 123 balls to take the Shane Lee Medal (player of the match).
His 175 run partnership with Shayne Smith (54 runs off 97 balls) secured the win.
It was a great victory (with 12 overs remaining) by the Sutherland team which contained
3 brothers - the Smith boys - Dylan, Shayne & Trent.
Dylan Smith (1-16) and Shayne Smith (1-32) were also wicket takers for Sutherland.

Family affair
Talent runs in the family. Their father Darren Smith, is a level 3 coach & former grade
player, who’s boys are now current grade players.
Eldest son Dylan has already passed the Sutherland milestone of 1000 runs from 68
matches. Shayne passed the 2000 runs milestone for Sutherland (all grades 79 matches)
and youngest son Trent was selected as vice-captain of the U/16 Sydney AW Green
Shield First XII team this year. Trent is in his final junior season.
All three brothers played their junior cricket with St Patricks Sutherland Cricket Club and
so it should come as no surprise that all three Smith boys are past winners of the St Pats
Junior Cricketer of the Year award.
